DIY enthusiast Pontus Alv is the man behind Polar Skateboards, based in Malmö, Sweden. As well as being one of Polar’s senior riders – he featured in a Polar promo from 2012, along with Hjalte Halberg, Jerome Campbell, Aaron Herrington, Michał Juraś and Kevin Rodriguez – Pontus is also the driving force of the company’s art department.
One of the pioneers of the original European skateboarding exodus to the USA, his early career saw him take his talent around the world, featuring in videos such as Cliche’s Europa from 2000, before he moved back home. Now just as much a filmmaker as a skateboarder, his independent films, such as 2010’s In Search Of The Miraculous, have left an indelible mark on the sport.
Pontus was born in Malmö on 16th May 1980. With a Swedish father and a Polish mother, he spent a lot of time in Poland when he was a child, and began skating at the age of seven with schoolfriends. Influenced by Hook and the Daggers crew in 1986’s Thrashin’, he first skated the streets around his house, before moving on to ramps and flyouts.
On or off a skateboard, Pontus is a driven man – from the bowls and ramps he tears apart to the spots he builds by hand, he always makes his presence known. No longer interested in entering competitions, he says that these days he just wants to ride with his friends, and only enjoys filming a part as long as it is for his own video.
