Bastien Salabanzi is nominated for Reader’s Choice European Skater Of The Year. He’s been killing it for the past ten years, won multiple contests and skated for the best companies. Not to mention the amount of groundbreaking video parts he’s put out. The guy even “made it in America”! Yet this “superstar skateboarder” currently doesn’t have an official board sponsor or a shoe sponsor. He announced that he was no longer on Jart a little while ago, but since then, nothing seems to have come up… So I was wondering what was going on, how can you be “better” than most professional skateboarders, yet not be pro? Is there something wrong with the guy? Something wrong with the industry? Is it actually that you just can’t quantify someone ‘s ability on a skateboard? Do kids not want to see the hardest tricks on the biggest spots anymore?

Whatever it is, it shows that no matter how gifted you are, you aren’t always going to be marketable, and that’s exactly why trying to be a “professional skateboarder” is such a gamble!

Anyway, here are the clips I was watching when I was thinking about this. I’m sure he’ll find a new board sponsor soon though…

Vans Downtown Showdown 2012

Amsterdam was host to this years Downtown Showdown. With obstacles constructed by Flip, Blueprint, Palace and Antiz, and with a whole load of rippers from Europe and from across the pond, it’s no surprise that it went off!

Vans Downtown Showdown Announcement

Vans have just announced the times and dates for the next epic instalment of their Downtown Showdown, this year to be hosted in Amsterdam, Holland on the 4th of August.

Flip Skateboards, Palace, Blueprint and Antiz are the lucky few that got to bring their designs to life this year and they will all be there to session the shit out of the obstacles and try to claim their piece of the €50,000 prize purse.

There’s going to be some serious heavy hitters there for this year, just check out this list of names:
