This Ain’t California On The Big Screen

Finally, This Ain’t California, the fantastic (pseudo) documentary on youth, freedom and the big lust for life – with skateboarding in GDR times being the driving force bhind all of it – is now officially coming to the big screen. A whole bunch of international film festival titles and nominations, including Berlinale’s “Perspective Deutsches Kino award”, in the bag, the movie co-starring a bunch of Berlin locals like Lennie Burmeister, Juppie Diens, Valeri Rosomako, Barney Benecker and Kai Hillebrandt, is making its premier tour through German cinemas, with screenings at Bright and an afterparty at the open air cinema infront of Berlin’s Cassiopeia club. If you somehow get the chance, be sure not to miss this one, it’s worth it. Good times galore!

This Ain’t California – A Blast From The Past

It’s Berlinale time. Ticket sales for the famed film festival has started today at 10:00, big international stars are getting their fancy dresses ready and red carpets are rolled out left and right. Among all the buzz This Ain’t California, a really interesting movie/(pseudo-)documentary is holding it’s world premiere as part of Berlinale’s section Perspektive Deutsches Kino. The movie tells the story of four friends who fell in love with the four wheeled plank in the mid-80′s GDR – out of all places and times, maybe one of the most unlikely to get infected with the skateboard fever. In using insane archive material and also letting his protagonists capture their lifes on super 8, director Marten Persiel did an amazing job in creating true felt GDR flavour, stunning pictures and a magic atmosphere.

To get the additional footy, known contemporary skaters such as Valeri Rosomako, Kai Hillebrand, Lennie Burmeister and Juppie Diens got treated to the eastern 80′s makeover – a rad job by everyone involved!

If you happen to be around the Berlin area tomorrow, Saturday, December 3rd, consider dropping by at Skatehalle Berlin to check the talent that’s going to hit us 2018 or so. The annual New Kids On The Block comp will have kids skating alongside resident pros, tag-teaming for glory! A chance for the new blood to shred with today’s rippers and learn from the old-farts. For the latter, the gratification will not only be smiling eyes, but also the “tricks for drinks” event later to be held at Cassiopeia club. Pros attending should be: Lennie Burmeister, Michi Mackrodt, Julian Dykmans, Roland “Hirschi” Hirsch, Pascal Reif, Yannick Schall, Ilja Juditzki, Denny Pham and more…

Germany’s Monster Mag To Hit 300!

Dudes over at Skateboard MSM are getting ready for the big one: 300th issue coming up, to be released at Bright next week. This is history in the making! The first ever mag I held in hands was a Monster, a long, long time ago. Monster has been going steady since 1982, bringing quality skating from all over and from domestic hot-spots far and wide to the sternmost village of the German speaking lands.
Celebrating the 300 some raging festivities will go down at Skatehalle Berlin/Cassiopeia night club on 8th of July, including a cash for tricks session at the Betonhausen DIY-spot, various video premieres and a massive party. If you happen to be in town for Bright, mark the date and make sure to be there!

CLASH 2011 On Its Way!

Skatehalle Berlin will hold another round of its illustrous series of invitational comps, the CLASH, on May 21st/22nd. Some sick riders have signed up already and even big names visiting from overseas are a regular at the Berlin-Friedrichshain based shred fest. The street course is looking at getting a facelift, the bowl has been treated with an additional corner with sick granite coping, and they will even host a vert competition including “Kings of Doubles”.

Saturday night will see a show of UK underground Grime heads, “Foreign Beggars”…
