Joel Peck was the lucky photographer who got to tag along with Rob Smith and Joe Gavin for their recent Travel Light mission in Israel. Here’s what he had to say about their little trip:
Describe your Travel Light trip to me in one sentence:
John Fowler – “Israel Style”.
Best story from Israel?
One night Rob suddenly had a kazoo in his hands and it didn’t leave those hands until sometime the next morning. Everywhere we went: bars, clubs – everywhere – all you could hear was that fucking kazoo. It was brilliant though… Rob ended up just dancing around in the street to his own noise and trying to involve strangers passing by. The last time I saw him that night he was straddling a huge bronze sculpture of a horse, playing his kazoo.
We drove out to the Dead Sea to go for a float and also to skate this abandoned water park. We were kicked out straight away so we decided to blag our way in to a private hotel beach. This was all rad – we floated about, Rob went temporarily blind from the salt – and then we climbed back into the waterpark. It was here, after skating, that we made the mistake of staying after sunset. Not only could we not see a fucking thing but also we were all getting torn to pieces by gnarly mosquitos. I had to try and pack up my bag in total darkness and this place isn’t easy to get around or to climb out of. I was the last one out and I had the car keys… everyone was locked out in the car park, still getting swarmed.
Who travelled the lightest:
Definitely Joe, although Sam did pretty well considering that he had all of his camera stuff.
Did you bring back any souvenirs?
Haha – A bottle of olive oil and a huge bag of glazed walnuts. Some rose oil for my girlfriend.
Rob had the best souvenir – he spent half an hour filling a bottle with mud from the Dead Sea.
Where would you have gone if you were the one picking the destination?
To be honest I was stoked to go to Israel. Skating around Jerusalem and swimming in the Dead Sea was amazing. There’s so much to skate there, especially in Tel Aviv. Iceland is somewhere I’ve always wanted to visit though…
Best Sam Bailey story:
Among many others, and probably not the best: I woke up from some noise on the first morning and turned to see Sam, still asleep, basically being face-raped by a pit bull.
